Alloy 1.4713

Ferritic, heat-resistant stainless steel with good resistance to high temperatures in oxidizing atmospheres

1.4713 is a ferritic, heat-resistant stainless steel developed specifically for applications requiring good resistance to high temperatures in oxidizing atmospheres. It belongs to the group of unalloyed or low-alloyed heat-resistant steels and is often used in industrial heat treatment.

Chemical Composition (in %):

Element

Content

Chromium (Cr)

6,0 – 8,0 %

Silicon (Si)

0,8 – 1,8 %

Carbon (C)

0,08 – 0,15 %

Manganese (Mn)

≤ 1,0 %

Phosphorus (P)

≤ 0,045 %

Sulfur (S)

≤ 0,015 %

Properties:

Heat resistance:

  • Resistant in oxidizing atmospheres up to approx. 850–950 °C
  • Good oxidation resistance due to chromium and silicon content
  • Not suitable for strongly reducing or sulfurous atmospheres

Corrosion resistance:

  • Limited corrosion resistance; not suitable for moist, chloride-containing, or strongly corrosive environments
  • Primarily designed for dry, oxidizing conditions at high temperatures

Mechanical properties:

  • Tensile strength: approx. 400–650 MPa (at room temperature)
  • Yield strength: approx. 200–300 MPa
  • Elongation: approx. 15–25 %
  • Moderate strength and ductility, decreasing at high temperatures

Weldability:

  • Limited weldability due to ferritic microstructure and relatively high carbon content
  • Preheating and post-weld heat treatment recommended to avoid cracking

Processing:

  • Good machinability
  • Can be hot-formed at temperatures between 850 and 1150 °C

Applications:

  • Thermal engineering:
    Boilers, burner components, exhaust ducts
  • Furnace construction:
Industrial furnace parts such as supports or protective tubes
  • Automotive industry:
Exhaust pipes and other thermally stressed components
  • Energy technology:
    Components of heating systems

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for reducing, sulfurous, or strongly corrosive environments

  • Limited weldability compared to low-alloyed or austenitic steels

  • Moderate mechanical properties at room temperature

Conclusion:

1.4713 is a robust ferritic steel particularly suitable for use at high temperatures in oxidizing environments. Its moderate corrosion resistance limits its use to dry conditions, but it is ideal for furnace applications, exhaust systems, and other heat-loaded components.
