Alloy 1.4307 / AISI 304L (X2CrNi18-9)

Non-rusting, austenitic stainless steel with excellent weldability and corrosion resistance

1.4307, also known as AISI 304L or X2CrNi18-9, is a non-rusting stainless steel belonging to the group of austenitic chromium-nickel steels. It is widely used in applications requiring excellent corrosion resistance and high weldability due to its low carbon content.

Chemical Composition (in %):

Element

Anteil

Carbon (C)

≤ 0,03

Chromium (Cr)

17,5 – 19,5

Nickel (Ni)

8,0 – 10,5

Manganese (Mn)

≤ 2,0

Silicon (Si)

≤ 1,0

Phosphorus (P)

≤ 0,045

Sulfur (S)

Properties:

  • Corrosion resistance:
Very good resistance in many media, particularly to water, steam, humid air, and diluted acids
  • Weldability:
Excellent – low carbon content prevents intergranular corrosion after welding
  • Machinability:
Moderate – less suitable than free-cutting steels
  • Magnetism:
Non-magnetic in solution-annealed condition (can become slightly ferromagnetic after cold working)
  • Surface finish:
Good polishing properties and attractive optical appearance

Applications:

  • Apparatus and container construction
  • Food industry
  • Chemical industry
  • Medical technology
  • Architecture (e.g., facades, railings)
  • Household appliances

Differences compared to 1.4301 (X5CrNi18-10 / AISI 304):

  • 1.4307 has a lower carbon content than 1.4301, making it more suitable for welding as the risk of intergranular corrosion is reduced.
  • Otherwise, both materials are very similar in corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.

Conclusion:

1.4307 (AISI 304L) is a widely used stainless steel offering excellent corrosion resistance, very good weldability, and attractive surface finish. It is especially suited for applications where welded joints must avoid intergranular corrosion.
