Properties:

Corrosion resistance:

  • High resistance to water, steam, air humidity, and weak acids
  • Not suitable for environments with high chloride content (e.g., seawater) or strongly reducing acids

Mechanical properties:

  • Tensile strength: 500 – 700 MPa
  • Yield strength: ≥ 190 MPa
  • Elongation: ≥ 45 %
  • Density: 7.9 g/cm³

Temperature resistance:

  • Good heat resistance up to approx. 300 °C
  • Not suitable for temperatures below -196 °C (risk of embrittlement)

Weldability:

  • Excellent weldability with all common processes (MIG, MAG, TIG)
  • No need for preheating or post-weld heat treatment

Surface treatment:

  • Good polishing properties, often used for decorative purposes
  • Polished surfaces are susceptible to fingerprints and dirt

Magnetic properties:

  • Non-magnetic in solution-annealed condition
  • Slight magnetism possible after cold working

Applications:

  • Construction and architecture:
    Railings, facades, kitchen surfaces, elevators

  • Food industry:
    Containers, pipelines, machine components

  • Chemical industry:
    Non-aggressive chemical environments

  • Medical technology:
    Surgical instruments, laboratory equipment

  • Household appliances:
    Sinks, pots, cutlery

Special Features:

  • 1.4301 is one of the most widely used stainless steels worldwide due to its good balance of cost, availability, and properties.

  • Corrosion resistance is reduced by mechanical damage or high chloride exposure.

  • Alternative materials for higher requirements: 1.4401 (X5CrNiMo17-12-2) or 1.4571 (X6CrNiMoTi17-12-2) with improved resistance to aggressive media.

Conclusion:

1.4301 (AISI 304) is a versatile stainless steel offering a good balance of corrosion resistance, mechanical properties, and processability. It is widely used across various industries, although higher-alloyed grades are recommended for environments with aggressive media.
