Alloy 1.4313 / X6CrNiMoTi17-12-2

Martensitic stainless steel with high strength, corrosion resistance, and good mechanical properties

1.4313, also known as X6CrNiMoTi17-12-2, is a high-alloy martensitic stainless steel with chromium as the main alloying element. This alloy combines corrosion resistance with high strength and good mechanical properties at medium to high temperatures. It is widely used where both mechanical load-bearing capacity and corrosion resistance are required.

Properties:

Corrosion resistance:
Good resistance to many aggressive environments, particularly against intergranular corrosion after welding due to titanium stabilization.
Less resistant than austenitic steels (e.g., 1.4301) in chloride-containing or strongly corrosive media

Strength:
High tensile strength and hardness, particularly after heat treatment
650–850 MPa tensile strength, 450–650 MPa yield strength, elongation 25–30 %

Weldability:

Limited due to martensitic structure; risk of cracking without proper heat treatment
Requires controlled parameters and post-weld treatment to relieve stresses and prevent cracking.

Heat resistance:

Good resistance up to approx. 600–700 °C
Above these temperatures, strength and corrosion resistance decrease.

Applications:

  • Energy industry:
Boilers, heat exchangers, piping, and steam generators exposed to medium to high temperatures

  • Chemical industry:
Reactors, containers, pumps, and valves in moderately corrosive media

  • Petrochemical industry:
Refinery components, pipelines, and catalysts under combined chemical and mechanical stress

  • Aerospace:
Certain engine components and heat shields requiring strength and corrosion resistance

  • Mechanical engineering:
Machine parts, tool components, bearings, and housings requiring both strength and corrosion resistance

Conclusion:

1.4313 (X6CrNiMoTi17-12-2) is a martensitic stainless steel that offers an excellent balance of strength, corrosion resistance, and toughness at medium temperatures. It is widely used in the energy, chemical, petrochemical, aerospace, and mechanical engineering industries. However, its weldability is limited and requires careful procedures to avoid cracking.
