Alloy 1.4410 /
AISI 2507

Super Duplex Stainless Steel with outstanding mechanical properties and excellent corrosion resistance

1.4410, also known as AISI 2507 or X2CrNiMoN25-7-4, is a highly alloyed duplex stainless steel containing a mixture of austenitic and ferritic phases. This special structure provides the alloy with outstanding mechanical properties and excellent corrosion resistance. It is particularly valued in extreme environments such as the offshore, chemical, and petrochemical industries due to its strength and corrosion resistance.

Properties:

  • Duplex structure:
Consists of both austenitic and ferritic phases, providing high strength (ferritic) with good toughness and corrosion resistance (austenitic).
Less prone to stress corrosion cracking and pitting corrosion, making it suitable for aggressive environments.
  • Corrosion resistance:
Outstanding resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing environments such as seawater.
Excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC), especially in chloride environments.
Resistant to oxidation at moderate temperatures.
  • Strength:
Higher strength than austenitic steels while maintaining good ductility and toughness.
  • Heat resistance:
Suitable for applications up to approx. 300–350 °C.
At higher temperatures, strength and corrosion resistance decrease.
  • Weldability:
Good weldability, though special filler materials are required to maintain duplex structure.
Post-weld heat treatment may be necessary for optimal properties.

Applications:

  • Offshore industry: Pipelines, flanges, heat exchangers, and vessels exposed to seawater and aggressive environments.
  • Chemical industry: Reactors, heat exchangers, piping, and valves exposed to strongly corrosive substances.
  • Petrochemical industry: Refinery equipment, gas processing plants, and other high-temperature applications.
  • Pulp and paper industry: Equipment exposed to aggressive chemicals during wood processing and pulp production.
  • Water treatment and desalination: Components exposed to chloride-rich water, such as pumps, filters, and desalination systems.

Conclusion:

1.4410 (AISI 2507) is a high-strength super duplex stainless steel offering an excellent balance of corrosion resistance and mechanical strength. It is particularly suitable for aggressive, corrosive environments in the offshore, chemical, petrochemical, and water treatment industries. Its duplex structure provides high resistance to stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and crevice corrosion while maintaining toughness and weldability
