Alloy 1.4462 /
AISI 2205

Duplex stainless steel with an excellent combination of strength and corrosion resistance

1.4462, also known as AISI 2205 or X2CrNiMoN22-5-3, is a duplex stainless steel containing both ferritic and austenitic phases. This structure gives it an excellent combination of strength and corrosion resistance. It is commonly used in corrosive environments and demanding mechanical applications, such as in the chemical, offshore, petrochemical, and energy industries.

Properties:

1. Duplex structure:

Contains a mixture of ferritic and austenitic phases, providing a balance of high strength and corrosion resistance.

Better resistance to stress corrosion cracking than purely austenitic steels, while maintaining good ductility.

Corrosion resistance:

  • High resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing environments (e.g., seawater)
  • Strong resistance to intergranular corrosion, supported by molybdenum and nitrogen content
  • Good resistance to stress corrosion cracking in low to medium chloride environments

2. Strength:

Higher strength compared to austenitic stainless steels, while retaining good toughness and ductility

3. Heat resistance:

Usable up to approx. 300–400 °C, above which performance in oxidizing environments decreases

4. Weldability:

Good weldability, though requires careful control to maintain phase balance

Filler materials designed for duplex steels are recommended to ensure corrosion resistance and mechanical properties

Applications:

  • Chemical industry:
Pipelines, reactors, and containers exposed to chlorides and corrosive chemicals
  • Offshore industry:
Pipes, heat exchangers, pumps, and components in seawater environments
  • Petrochemical industry:
Refinery equipment, reactors, and piping subject to mechanical and chemical stress
  • Power industry:
Heat exchangers, exhaust gas ducts, and pumps in aggressive environments
  • Water treatment:
Desalination plants and other systems handling seawater

Conclusion:

1.4462 (AISI 2205) is a duplex stainless steel valued for its outstanding combination of strength and corrosion resistance. Its high resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, especially in chloride environments, makes it ideal for challenging applications in the chemical, petrochemical, offshore, and energy industries.
